Lash Extension Aftercare: Do’s and Don’ts for a Longer Lasting Set

Neat, well cared for lash extensions

You just left the studio with a beautiful new set. What you do over the next few weeks decides how long it will look that good. The good news is that lash aftercare is simple once it becomes part of your routine.

This guide covers the first day, daily care, products to avoid and a few habits that protect both your extensions and your natural lashes.

The first 24 hours

Lash adhesive keeps settling after you leave the appointment. During the first day, avoid getting your lashes wet, and stay away from steam, saunas, hot yoga and very hot showers that put steam right on your face.

Try not to touch, rub or pull the lashes. If you need to wash your face, use a damp cloth around the eye area instead of splashing water directly on your lashes.

How to clean your lashes

Clean lashes last longer. Every few days, use a lash safe, oil free cleanser with a soft brush. Gently brush from the base toward the tips, then rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Once they are dry, brush them with a clean spoolie. Cleaning removes oil, makeup and dust that can weaken the bond and irritate the lash line.

Products to avoid near your eyes

Oil is the main thing to avoid. Oil based makeup removers, cleansing balms, heavy eye creams and some serums can break down the adhesive. Check labels and choose oil free options for the eye area.

Skip mascara on your extensions, especially waterproof formulas, which are hard to remove. Mechanical eyelash curlers can bend or break extensions, so leave them out of your routine.

Sleeping and daily habits

Sleeping face down on your pillow crushes the lashes and can bend them. Sleeping on your back is best. If that is hard, try a silk or satin pillowcase, which creates less friction.

Brush your lashes each morning to keep them neat. And resist the urge to pick at lashes that look out of place. Let loose lashes fall on their own.

Signs you should contact your artist

A little sensitivity right after an appointment can happen, but persistent redness, swelling, itching or discomfort is not something to ignore. Contact your lash artist, and if symptoms are strong, see a medical professional.

If several lashes are twisting or pointing in odd directions, it usually means they have grown out. A fill will remove them and bring the set back to shape.

Keep your fills on schedule

Even with perfect aftercare, extensions shed with your natural lashes. Booking a fill every two to three weeks keeps the set full. At our studio maintenance is priced lower up to 14 days and a bit higher between 15 and 21 days.

Booking your next appointment before you leave is the easiest way to stay on track.

Can I wear makeup with lash extensions?
Yes, but avoid mascara on the extensions and use oil free products and removers around the eyes.
How often should I clean my extensions?
Every few days is enough for most people, and always after wearing eye makeup.
Why are my extensions twisting?
They have usually grown out with your natural lashes. A fill removes them and restores the shape.
